Intimate courtyard garden

We were asked to transform a small paved area into an intimate courtyard garden for our clients to enjoy during their visits to the UK from the Middle East. The garden should be a space for entertaining, relaxing and softened by planting, while making a feature of the white rendered walls of the neighbouring property.

This garden is designed to look its best from all angles, as it can be seen from almost all of the rooms in the house. We centered this garden around a central water feature surrounded by planting, in a nod to Arabic gardens. The water feature divides the garden into sections: a patio for outdoor cooking and dining, a decked area to soak up the late afternoon sun, and a clay paved path to guide you from the master bedroom out through the corten steel moon gate.

The material palette is a restrained selection of natural stone, clay pavers, corten steel, and weathered timber.
